How to get iPhone out of recovery mode?

My iPhone 3g (8GB) was plugged out ( by accident ) while being prepared to restore, it's in recovery mode now, and i can't get it out. Ive done the thing where you hold both ons for 10 secs and continue holding the home on, but it gives me error 1601 or something. I think i need to get it into DFU mode now, and obviously i have to restore it again to fix it. Itunes normally doesnt detect it, only when i attempt to put it in DFU mode, in wich case it gives me error 1601. Apple has a page on the website on how to fix that error, but it doesnt work. Ive tried ZiPhone, but it didnt detect my iphone either. Any suggestions?
