Any way I can get my music back from Iphone backup?

I don't know why it's so much stricter than an IPod, which one can pretty much connect and play on any computer. But I think after the millionth time of being told if I decide to sync, I'll lose everything, I clicked the wrong on and "poof" it's gone. Frankly, I think Apple needs to not be so draconian about this and also not make it quite so "easy" to casually wipe out someone's data. Now that that's out of the way, my question is, being that I have a backup, can I selectively restore (or at least view) things like playlists, etc.? I can't do a full restore because I have some data that would be overwritten, and I believe the vast majority of the songs are on my main computer anyway, so I could get them back. But I would at least like to refresh myself as to what exactly I had on there. I kind of remember where the folder with the backup files (and there are many) are located. It is a Windows machine. What is the best software for examining the backup files and making sense out of them?
