How do I get my one-year-old to hold my hand in public?

that is what the leash was made for :) I used the backpack leash while teaching my daughter how to walk with me, holding my hand, but it also prevented her from darting away. The rule was hold my hand or be in the stroller, but at one...there are some times they get away from you. The leash without also hand holding can be prob;ematic IMO, especially if you have a runner :) because they will run and then when they run out the slack the suddun stop will make them fall. I was never able to just let mine walk "on the leash" on her own. It was just a saftey backup. I was also pregnant with #2 at the time and when brother came along it was invaluable because if one takes off, you cant leave the baby in the stroller or shopping cart to chase the toddler.
